About the Cooperative

Teacher With Students

San Juan BOCES was created in 1973 and in 2010 merged with the Southwest BOCES. Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) are public organizations that were created by the Colorado Legislature in 1965 to provide shared educational programs and services to school districts, and our primary role is to support our member school districts as the Administrative Unit for Exceptional Student Services.

In that role, we provide leadership and specialized service providers to support the evaluation, identification and service implementation for students with disabilities at school. We carry out all applicable state and federal statutes and regulations and are responsible for financial commitments and agreements for special education programs and services.

We are also involved in the determination of the number and types of special education personnel required to meet the needs of children, and the procedures for regular, periodic evaluation of programs, services and student progress. We are responsible for resource allocation and management to ensure adequate personnel, facilities, materials and equipment and identify procedures for prior notice, consent, confidentiality and due process.

Additionally, we support a variety of grant-funded collaborative initiatives, and we have just over 80 exceptional employees working in schools across 5 counties!
The San Juan BOCES serves the following districts: Archuleta County (Pagosa Springs), Bayfield, Dolores, Dolores County (Dove Creek), Ignacio, Mancos, Montezuma-Cortez, and Silverton. In addition, we provide contracted services to Durango Schools, and a number of private and charter schools in our region.
